Alright, my detox guys and gals! How’s your summer going? We have less than a month of summer left, and for many of us, August and September are the hottest months of the year. (Ironic that most of summer is mildly hot, until just before the end, eh?) Today I’ll be introducing my favorite way to keep cool – and the best way to keep cool this summer, if you ask me.
It all comes down to a drink. Yes, a drink! Not the “cold drink” also known as “soft drinks,” and not a drink with alcohol (because those drinks, even if they are chilled, actually add more heat to our bodies). The key is finding just the right ingredients for our super refreshing cooling summer drink.
First off, we will be selecting from fruits that are cooling. What does it mean, if they are “cooling?” Well, fruits that are naturally colder than others. This would be fruits like melons, cucumbers, and pomegranates. (Hint: most fruits are cooling, some are just more cooling than others. Some vegetables can be cooling too, like celery.)
Today I’m going to be talking about one of my favorite fruits: the cucumber. Cucumbers are highly nourishing to our bodies – they have natural properties that help fight inflammation, and flush out free radicals that can cause cancer.
Cucumbers are also extremely beneficial for the blood, kidneys, and bladder. Drinking a tall glass of this bad boy will get your blood running cooler, fast.
The best way to keep cool this summer:
Simple, right? A 1-ingredient drink that will have you chillin’ in no time. I recommend trying it with room-temperature cucumbers. For most, this will be cooling enough. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, though, you may want to try refrigerating your cucumbers before juicing.
Tip: Be sure to drink your cucumber juice within 15 minutes of juicing if you have a high speed juicer – otherwise the juice will oxidize and you’ll lose all the nutritious content.
